Embark on a spiritual journey to explore the most renowned Buddhist temples in Kandy. As a retreat from the hot climate of Colombo, Kandy is a popular destination celebrated for its cool environment and peaceful ambiance. This sacred city is a treasured hub for devout Buddhists across Sri Lanka. Throughout history, Sri Lankan monarchs have played a pivotal role in the upkeep and advancement of the island's Buddhist temples, particularly in Kandy.
Kandy is recognized as one of the foremost religious sites for Buddhists, as it houses the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, widely known as “Dalada Maligawa.” This temple, along with several other revered temples, makes the city a significant destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. In recognition of its cultural and historical value, UNESCO declared Kandy a World Heritage Site in 1988.
To provide a deeper connection to Kandy’s spiritual roots, Ceylon Waves has designed a unique temple tour apart from the usual city excursions, allowing you to fully embrace the religious essence of these sacred landmarks. Additionally, we suggest visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic during the “thewawa” ritual to witness the grand offering ceremony, accompanied by mesmerizing drumbeats and a glimpse into Sri Lankan traditions.
Your tuk-tuk journey commences with a pick-up from your accommodation, and the first destination is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This highly venerated temple is revered by Buddhists around the world and enshrines the left canine tooth of Lord Buddha. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its immense historical and religious significance.
The next stop is Bahirawakanda Temple, also known as Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, distinguished by its towering Buddha statue, which can be seen from almost any part of Kandy. Situated on Bahirawakanda Hill, this iconic statue offers panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape.
The tour then proceeds to Lankatilaka Raja Maha Vihara, commonly referred to as the Blue Temple or Lankatilaka Temple. Located in Hiyarapitiya, Udunuwara, this four-story temple, which rises 80 feet high, is set on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Hantane Mountain Range. Built in 1344 during the Gampola period under the patronage of King Buwanekabahu IV, Lankatilaka Temple stands as a testament to both architectural grandeur and historical legacy.
Next, we head to the Gadaladeniya Temple in Diggala, Kandy. This ancient monastery, constructed in 1344 AD by King Buwanekabahu IV, was designed by South Indian architect Ganesvarachchari and features elements reminiscent of South Indian architectural styles. Built over a massive rock, the temple offers a fascinating glimpse into its historical significance.
Our final stop is the Nelligala Buddhist Temple in the village of Muruthalawa, which also serves as an international Buddhist center. Construction of this modern temple began in 2015. Perched on top of a mountain, the site provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscapes, including Alagalla Mountain, Batalegala, and the Hanthana Mountain Range. On a clear day, you might be able to see Adam’s Peak, also known as Sripada. The stunning panorama and serene atmosphere of Nelligala attract pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.
After visiting these sacred sites, the tuk-tuk will take you back to your accommodation, bringing an end to an enriching and unforgettable temple tour with Ceylon Waves.
